The Middle of The End

By Graham Putman

As I'm writing this, Bush has just won his second term. I've known that we've been doomed for a while. See, back in the 90's, I remember scientists stating confidently that if we, as humans, didn't completely reverse our greenhouse gas emission, the Earth would reach a point of no return in 10 years (from back then), at which point the Earth would have about 50 years until it could no longer sustain life. This information terrified me, but I was deluded into thinking the people of Earth would come to their senses and save us from....us...

In the past decade, or so, I have learned through life's various twists and turns, that people are mainly insane or stupid. I consider this to be fact. Some are insane, some are stupid, and some both. I fall comfortably in the 'both' category. Don't misunderstand me here, either: I believe my crazy-dumb theory is simply human nature, I don't hold it against us. We're doing the best we can with the tools we are given. Our survival instincts have gotten us this far, but the daunting task of surviving has evolved over the years, and is much more complicated now than when we only needed to catch something, eat it, then procreate with a compatible partner. Alas, due to our misguided ways, we have reached what was predicted ten years ago: the point of no return. According to the leading scientists back than, this is the beginning, or maybe the middle, of the end of the world.

Being an optimist, I still think there is hope. According to the scientists today, the theories on the Earth's ability to cope with water, air and soil pollution range all over the board. A vocal minority of the scientific community think it's all good. In my opinion, these are not so much scientists as spokespeople with science degrees. Then there are other scientists who are convinced we are currently, irreversibly doomed. I figure the truth is somewhere in the middle.

You know – We're doomed, just not quite yet. You may wonder what my point is. My point is that there is a greater than ever need to reverse our stupid, insane ways of living. We all know what's needed, what we can do. If not try two minutes of research (davidsuzuki.org) and take some steps, just in case we are, in fact, in the middle of the end of the world. I encourage yelling, throwing, writing, singing and assembling lawfully or unlawfully to protest the end of the world.

Come on ev'ryone, we can do it.
